New Beginners Running group

Feel like a new year and a new you?

Our new beginners running group is starting Tuesday 17th January.

The sessions are £1.00 per week for 16 weeks or pay for the whole course upfront for £10.00, you will also recieve a £5.00 discount on the £25.00 membership fee if you decide to join the club once the course is complete.

This group is aimed at absolute beginners, people who are unable to run for a bus so to speak! So don’t worry if you are unable to run right now, or if you do want to increase your current fitness/running level within a supportive experienced environment this is the group for you. We meet at the Ashbrooke cricket club in Sunderland. There will be plenty of friendly people to welcome you to the club.

We will start out with a 2mile gentle run/jog around the Ashbrooke area ensuring your pace/ability is catered for, everyone is supported around the whole route and no one is left behind. This will then increase gradually to 5miles within an hour over a 16 week period, this will include 12 weeks of building up pace distance and stamina, ending with a 4 week programme of sessions that are part of the main club, once the course is complete you can choose to join the main club on a Wednesday night from 7pm.

my daughter and granddaughter would like to join beginners group. is there an age restriction my granddaughter is 16

    • Harry Harrison says:

      Hello Elizabeth

Membership of the Club is only for adults aged 17 years and above; however, we would be prepared to accept a 16-year old on the Beginners Course providing they are accompanied by an adult throughout. Sorry I didn’t see your question before tonights Beginners Group; however, your daughter and grand-daughter would be welcome to join us from next Tuesday.

      Harry

Hi, I’m just wondering would it be to late to join the beginners running group next week (your week 3) as I have been tied up with other commitments. I am now available and would love the challenge

    • Harry Harrison says:

      Hi Lynne

Apologies for not getting back to you sooner. Next week (Week 4) is the last week we’ll be accepting any more participants. Otherwise people face the prospect of being too far behind those who started in the first few weeks. This years group has been hugely popular with over 140 people registered so far. If you’re still keen, we’ll see you next Tuesday at 6:30pm at the Ashbrooke Club.

  3. Stew says:

HI Guys, will you be starting anymore new runner groups……..

    • Harry Harrison says:

      Hi Stew

Not sure at this stage. The groups require a huge commitment from our members to support, over the current course we will deliver >1200 hours of running training. We’ve tried running groups over the summer but have struggled with holidays etc, unfortunately the Autumn is usually too busy with other things to fit a group in. It’s unlikely therefore that we’ll do another course until Jan 2018. In the meantime there are Run Britain groups locally, the SeafRUNt Smilers and Silky Striders who cater for beginners all year round. Do a search at http://www.runbritain.co.uk. I believe that Washington Running Club have plans for a Beginners Group, search for them on the internet. Good luck

    • Harry Harrison says:

      Hi Gary
Strollers is an adults only club from 18 years upwards. For juniors you’d need to try either Houghton Harriers or Sunderland Harriers, both clubs train at Silksworth track.

  5. Cheryl Henshaw says:

Is the club still running and do u just turn up

    • Harry Harrison says:

      Hi Cheryl
I’m afraid that the 2017 Beginners Group has now finished. We plan to run the next one starting in January 2018. In the meantime there are 2 Run England groups which take beginners all year round – Silky Striders meet at the Puma Centre on a Wednesday and the SeafRUNt Smilers who meet at Seaburn on a Thursday. If you Google their names you’ll easily find their details.

  6. Paige says:

    is this still happening?

    • Harry Harrison says:

      Hi
We’ll be launching the 2018 Beginners Group on Tuesday 16 January at 6:30pm, this will take all comers from wherever they currently are to being able to run 5 miles over a 16 week course.

  7. Ann Brown says:

Hi I was wondering are you starting a new beginners course in January 2018 and how do I join the course if you are. Thank you in advance

    • Harry Harrison says:

      Hi Ann

Yes, our 2018 Beginners Course will start at 6:30pm on 16 Jan. We’ll be meeting at Ashbrooke Sports Club and explain how the 16 week course will operate. The cost of the course is £1 per week or £10 for the entire 16 weeks. There is no pre-registration, simply turn up ready to run on the 16th.

  8. Ann Brown says:

That’s great thank you will see you then.

  9. Ruth woods says:

I appear to have missed the first session of this years course. When does the next one start?

    • Harry Harrison says:

      Hi Ruth

It’s not too late to join this course, we’re accepting starters up to Week 4 (6 Feb). We won’t be doing another course until 2019.

      Harry

  10. Ruth woods says:

Thank you. That’s great! I will try and get over tomorrow evening.

  11. Jill says:

Hi please could you let me know if you have any other times for beginners other than tues eve .

    Thankyou

    • Harry Harrison says:

      Hi Jill

I’m afraid that the 2019 Beginners Course has finished now, we won’t be running another one until Jan 2020. There are 2 Run England groups in Sunderland who work with beginners all year round. The Silky Striders are based at Silksworth while the SeafRUNt Smilers operate in the Seaburn area, Google either to find out more details.

  12. Jill says:

Please could I join the beginners no running experience for many years but I’d really like to try . I am 58 but this is something I am passionate about but lack confidence.
