Winter Handicap

This is a 5K chip timed event where start times are staggered based on your estimated time to run 5K. Points are awarded for finishing positions (200 for 1st, 199 for 2nd). Five events are held throughout the winter (Oct/Nov/Dec/Jan/Feb – weather permitting with March as a replacement) on the second Wednesday of each month. The best 4 scores count. After each event start times will be reviewed against the following rules:

If you are between 30-60s faster than your predicted time, your estimated time will be reduced by 30s for the next event.

If you are between 60-120s faster than your predicted time, your estimated time will be reduced by 60s for the next event.

If you are more than 120s faster than your predicted time, your estimated time will be reduced by 120s for the next event.

If you are between 30-60s slower than your predicted time, your estimated time will be increased by 30s for the next event.

If you are between 60-120s slower than your predicted time, your estimated time will be increased by 60 for the next event.

If you are more than 120s slower than your predicted time, your estimated time will be increased by 120s for the next event.

The course is from Sue’s Cafe to Grannie Annies then up the bank to The Bungalow Cafe. Turning you head towards Seaburn, sticking to the footpath until turning at Fat Buddha before re-tracing your route back to Sue’s Cafe to finish.

All runners will need a timing chip. If you don’t have one and have never had one then you will be given one before the first event. If you have lost one that you previously were given then it will cost £5 to obtain a replacement. If you originally paid for your chip and can no longer find it then we will give you one for free. Chips should be either attached to one of your running shoes or carried at the front of your body, chips tucked in back pockets often are not detected by the system.

Along with a Male & Female competition runners are encouraged to form teams (these can be single sex or mixed) to compete for trophies. This is traditionally a competition which is won by one of our newer runners who displays a steady improvement throughout the series of events.

On each occasion marshals are needed to ensure the safety of our runners so if you’re not running please consider volunteering.
